Homemade Taco Seasoning

Perfect for tacos, or any recipe that uses ground beef!

Recently I’ve been upping my cooking game, and I’ve started ditching pre-made seasoning mixes for homemade seasoning mixes. The main reason for the switch is that I can control the amount of salt in the seasonings I use, because lately I’ve been finding pre-made seasoning mixes to be way too salty. It’s also easier to adjust the seasoning to suit the tastes of those who will be eating the meal.

This homemade taco seasoning is now my go-to seasoning whenever I make Ground Beef Tacos. It also works well with Chili con Carne, or any recipe that uses ground beef.

Try this seasoning mix as it’s written first, then feel free experiment with it.

Enjoy!

Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp. chili powder
  • 1.5 tbsp. Cajun seasoning
  • 1 tbsp. ground cumin
  • 1/2 tbsp. granulated garlic
  • 1/2 tbsp. oregano leaves
  • 1/2 tbsp. ground black pepper
  • 1/2 tbsp. ground salt
  • Optional: 1/2 tbsp. ground cayenne red pepper
    • Skip the cayenne pepper if you don’t want the seasoning to be too hot, or add 1 full tbsp. of cayenne pepper if you want to turn up the heat!

Note: all of the spices I use are from McCormick.

The key to this recipe is the flavorful and fiery taste of Cajun seasoning! Most taco seasonings use paprika or chipotle, but adding in a little bit of Cajun seasoning will give your tacos that authentic taco taste! This is my absolute go-to Cajun seasoning:

Quantity and Use

This taco seasoning recipe makes about 6.5-7 tablespoons of seasoning mix (depending on whether or not you add in any cayenne pepper).

I use 2 tablespoons for every pound of ground beef.

Preparation and Storage

Use a tablespoon measuring spoon, and simply mix all of the ingredients together in a small bowl!

Like I said I’ve been upping my cooking game recently, so if you’re looking for some high-quality measuring spoons that also look great on a kitchen countertop, give these a try:

As far as storage, I initially kept my homemade seasoning mixes in a plastic bag and labeled them with a marker. That definitely works, but I recently treated myself to these awesome spice/storage jars:

I hope you enjoy this homemade taco seasoning!
