F.A.M.I.L.Y. – Forget About Me, I Love You
As my wife and I approach our six year wedding anniversary, I find myself reflecting on that one moment in time. A fleeting moment, really, if you just consider the act of marriage. But what a beautiful and truly life-changing moment if you consider the lifetime we’ve created together.
I recall an acronym for the word “family” that I heard many years ago: Forget About Me, I Love You. And that got me thinking about the first times I said “I love you” to my wife. I remember saying “I love you” to her as my girlfriend: a love now exposed, potentially vulnerable but quickly reciprocated. I remember saying “I love you” to her as my fiancee: a blossoming love searching for direction. And I remember saying “I love you” to her as my wife: an unconditional love for all eternity.
The essence of our love, and of the journey we embarked on together, is our family. Our family started with our relationship. And just like everything in life, relationships must constantly be nurtured lest they wither and fade. I nurture our relationship by fulfilling my wife’s needs before my own. That was my commitment, my promise, my vow six years ago. Living “Forget About Me” reveals my “I Love You.” That is how I say “I love you” now.
What does family mean to you? How do you say “I love you” to your partner? Let me know in the comments below!
